The Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group is a discursive space for scholars of music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde. Through its annual meetings and online communications, the group aims to strengthen, support, and develop its members’ ideas and sense of community. It also seeks to bring attention to and foster scholarship on post-1945 music both within the Society for Music Theory and in music scholarship at large.

Hi everyone, thanks to those who commented on the last draft of the bylaws. I’ve uploaded a third draft. Based on the discussion, I only changed a few details related to defining quorum. (There wasn’t enough discussion to yield a clear consensus, so I went with 10 people or 5% of the membership, whichever is larger, with membership defined as the membership in this HC group.) The discussion around the mission statement seemed to reach a consensus to leave it as is. There were several other suggestions, but nothing else seemed to gain traction with commenters so I left the rest of it as is. (If you missed the discussion on the second draft, you can view it here.)

Please take a look and comment if you see any remaining issues or disagree with the new definition of quorum! I’ve left commenting on the document open (in case anyone wants to highlight any typos or wording issues), but for substantive points, it will be easiest for others to follow the conversation if you reply on HC as a response to this post.

If no one raises any objections by Monday, Dec. 7, we’ll vote on the Bylaws as is. Thanks for your help, everyone!

      Tara (and Laura)

Great work everyone! The one thing that still trips me up is the first line: “scholars of 20th- and 21st-century music.” The group is Post-1945. The quoted part implies that we include pre-1945 and project an end date for the group. Maybe it outlives us?

I suggest: “scholars of music since 1945” instead of the above.

Timothy, thanks, your suggestion makes sense – I’ll make that change in the final version.
