      Dear MSA Forum members

All members of MSA are warmly invited to consider the eligibility of friends or colleagues for this award, however, formal nominations should be made by appropriate Chapters. Please see below.

      The Award

Established in 2008, the Don & Joan Squire Award acknowledges exceptional voluntary service to the Australian musicological community, broadly defined as those engaged in the scholarly study of any and all music. A cash prize of $500, the Award is intended to encourage a culture of volunteering within the MSA and enhance the standing of the MSA in music research. The award is a cash prize of $500 and certificate with citation. Past winners include:

2008 Gordon D Spearritt (Qld); 2009 Doreen Bridges (SA); 2010 John Whiteoak (Vic); 2011 Stephen Wild (ACT); 2012 Allan Marett (NSW); 2013 Therese Radic (Vic); 2014 David Symons (WA); 2015 David Tunley (WA); 2016 Margaret Kartomi (Vic); 2017 Robyn Holmes (ACT); 2018 Linda Barwick (NSW); 2019 John A Phillips (NSW)

      Eligibility

Any person who has made a significant voluntary contribution to the musicological community is eligible to be nominated for the Award, except: 1) any person who, at the time of the call for nominations, is a member of the MSA National Committee or any of the MSA Chapter Committees, or 2) a nominee for any position on the MSA National Committee.

Nominees need not be members of the MSA.

      Nominations

Nominations are to be made by Chapter committees of the MSA and should be submitted to the Awards Chair (John Phillips, by email) under the signature of the President of the Chapter and be seconded by another member of the committee. Each Chapter may nominate one person annually. The nomination must include 1) the name, address, telephone and e-mail address of the nominee, 2) justification for the nomination (not exceeding two pages).

      Judging

Nominations will be considered by the MSA National Committee. The President of the Chapter of the winning recipient will be asked to contact the winner and confirm that they will accept the award, and, presuming so, invite them to attend the awards ceremony. The winner of this year’s award will be announced at the MSA AGM on 3 December 2020, held online at this year’s national conference, University of Melbourne.

Enquiries and/or nominations should be made in confidence to the Awards Committee Chair John Phillips.

Deadline for nominations: Friday, 6 November 2020.

      All best,

      Fred Kiernan, on behalf of

      John Phillips, Awards Chair, MSA
