This is the first group assignment of the semester, the end of the first section of the semester, “Industrialization and Working People.” Following the group presentations, students completed a self-evaluation questionnaire about their work and the activity more generally. In general, it was a successful and fun activity, and students enjoyed researching the topics and hearing about other projects. I gave them a choice between a historical or a present-day issue, and that mix works well in a General Education class where I have both history majors and non-history majors.

Description: Visit the online exhibit “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” http://americanhistory.si.edu/sweatshops/The exhibit raises the question of “what should Americans know about sweatshop production in the United States?” and explores the past and present of sweatshops in the United States. Based on the exhibit and the book, The Triangle Fire, prepare a 10 min presentation or poster about ONE relevant aspect of sweatshop production.

Instructions:

1. Groups of 2 to 4 students.
2. Research: provide an in-depth analysis of one aspect of sweatshop production and find a concrete example to illustrate your point.
3. Presentation: 1 slide explaining the issue and how it relates/connects to sweatshop production and one slide with an example (concrete / a case) that illustrates that point/include at least one visual aid (picture/map/graph)
4. Abstract (1 paragraph summarizing your project), bibliography/references, and complete names of all group members.
