Moderator Daniel Tunkel  Daniel Tunkel has had a lifelong interest in Jewish music. He is a keen ba’al t’filah, ba’al kriyah and chorister and is actively involved in composing and arranging music for choir, solo voice and other ensembles.  A lawyer with a major London law firm, Daniel divides his time between London and Israel, where his wife Rachel is based, and with whom he has a street music flute duet. He is in the process of transferring his late father Victor Tunkel’s significant Jewish Music collection to the Leo Baeck institute Library in London, according to Victor’s wishes.

What do we mean by nusach and wherein lies its importance? Is this centuries-old tradition, the immutable structure for the music of Ashkenazi prayer? Moderator Hirsh Cashdan, ECA Convention programme Director trained at Jews college and is also passionate about synagogue music, though he spent his career in business. He creates and runs the ECA very successful convention programmes. On his retirement he offered his time to the Jewish Music Institute taking several responsible roles. He created and ran ‘Tephilharmonic’ – a precursor to ECA. His special interest is Leyening (chanting the Torah) with a focus on communicating the contents to the congregation.  He now has a very busy programme active on both international and UK charities. For ECA Hirsh advises on all aspects of ECA work, moderates VOC sessions and creates and delivers ECA convention programmes.
