“Health Equity in Architecture at the Intersection of Teaching, Archive and Curating”

Dear all;

We would be very happy if you could join our online panel, “Health Equity in Architecture at the Intersection of Teaching, Archive and Curating” on November 4th, 2023, 10:00 am EST (Eastern time zone for North and South America, aka New York time zone; UTC–4) and share our panel announcement with your colleagues in the field of architecture archive and architecture history.   It will be held by “Epidemic Urbanism Initiative” and our goal is to stimulate productive connections and communication between the fields of historical documentation and teaching in architecture (history) with an inclusive mindset. Although “health equity” has become one of the urgent issues in architecture and architecture history, the response by architecture archives and collections to this vital topic seems to be critical and there is a strong need to develop dialogue between archivists, curators, teaching and research communities in architecture (history) with a focus on health equity.  Although urgent awareness of architectural design for health equity emerged with the impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic, our panel assumes that the root of this problem lies within how we have constructed architectural his/herstory thus far. Architectural design education currently demands strong support to bring attention to the issue of health equity and its historical background, while historical documentation and curatorial practices (and their methods) in architecture merit considerable attention to understand the substantial gaps in the field.

The panel will feature:

• Dr. Elke Miedema, researcher and teacher, Inholland University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands, and co-founder of HealthScapes
• Dr. Aaron Davis, lecturer in Architecture, University of South Australia
• Dr. Julie Collins, research fellow and curator, the Architecture Museum at the University of South Australia
• Dr. Nilay Evcil, professor, Department of Architecture, Beykent University, Türkiye
• Kadir Uyanık, co-founder, do[x]architecture, Türkiye

Our panel aims to discuss the following questions with a global perspective:

• What are some of the substantial gaps in the teaching and historical documentation of health equity in architecture?
• What can be done to fill these gaps?
• How can teaching, archival, and curatorial communities in architectural his/herstory develop productive collaborations to support post-pandemic teaching in architecture and health equity?
