Position Overview

The Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities supports, creates, and disseminates digital research in the humanities. It provides an intellectual hub for digital humanists and fosters an interdisciplinary conversation across the university.

The Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities (IDRH) seeks a technically accomplished Digital Media Specialist to play a critical role in the IDRH and its digital storytelling initiative. Committed to social justice and inclusion, this multi-project initiative is designed to transform the art of storytelling for a digital age. It recovers, collects, and shares the stories of marginalized communities using techniques that reflect the priorities and traditions of those communities. The initiative brings together local scholars working on storytelling projects with diverse partners outside KU to create an alliance of projects that together will engage in a rich, critical, and constructive conversation centered on the ethics, politics, and diverse techniques of digital storytelling.

The successful candidate will play a central role in this initiative, providing technical expertise to a range of storytelling projects, including building a web-based storytelling platform and assisting humanists with the use and implementation of DH tools and methods. Applicants are expected to have a broad familiarity with the digital humanities and its resources, including the capacity of the field to intervene on behalf of marginalized populations.  Relevant areas of expertise may include website development, text encoding, coding for the humanities, data modeling and visualization,  digital mapping tools, computational text analysis, machine learning, experience with platforms used for digital exhibits, archives, or e-publishing, innovative use of digital media in web publications, AR/VR/3D technologies, knowledge of best practices for digital object creation, and other areas.

Founded in 2010, the IDRH is supported through a partnership between the Hall Center for the Humanities, the KU Libraries, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. IDRH’s programming includes an occasional DH Forum, a speaker series, hands-on workshops, project consulting, and internal funding competitions. The Digital Media Specialist will be a critical part of a small leadership team. The successful candidate will play a central role implementing IDRH projects. Duties will include project consulting and development, curriculum development and training faculty, staff, and students in digital humanities tools and methods, website development, and digital messaging and outreach.

As a full-time member of the leadership team, the Digital Media Specialist will have the opportunity to participate in shaping the vision of the IDRH and network with the broader field of digital humanities. The successful applicant will raise the visibility of digital humanities on campus and enhance the KU and regional DH community.

The Digital Media Specialist will report to the Co-Directors of the IDRH and will work closely with faculty, students, librarians, and campus IT staff. The Digital Media Specialist will help ensure that KU-based digital humanities projects are effectively integrated into the broader range of technology, library, and teaching programs at KU. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic scholar/technologist to gain experience supporting digital humanities research in a supportive and collaborative environment.

This position is contingent on funding, with internal funding for three years, funding thereafter contingent on external grants.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERCENTAGE OF TIME
The responsibilities of the Digital Media Specialist include, but are not limited to the following:

Technical Support and Implementation (50%)
•    Provide technical expertise and support on all facets of the digital storytelling project, including contributing to the creation of an online platform for digital storytelling.
•    Provide project-level assistance to a wide range of individual student, faculty, and community projects.
•    Work with KU Libraries and other experts on advising the IDRH on the best practices of data management, preservation, and visualization.
•    Understand the potential benefits and liabilities of various digital platforms and tools and communicate them clearly to a range of audiences.
•    Lead in the creation, implementation, revision, and maintenance of all IDRH digital platforms, including its website and social media channels. This also includes the digital storytelling initiative.
•    Provide technical expertise, support, and implementation skills on all future IDRH projects, including a range of major grant-funded initiatives.
•    Provide feedback to the IDRH on the technical dimensions of external projects, including those submitted to the IDRH for grant funding.
•    Create and maintain project documentation.

Technical Training (30%)
•    Offer introductory training in tools and methods of the digital humanities. This will include overseeing and executing a regular schedule of hands-on workshops, training sessions, and seminars. Training should be appropriate for faculty and graduate students at a research university.
•    Offer regular, project-specific consultations on digital humanities projects. Consultations are designed to empower faculty and graduate students to pursue their own research and/or teaching with digital humanities methods and tools.

Digital Media Support (15%)
•    Create, optimize, maintain, and/or revise all IDRH digital platforms (website and social media).
•    Regular maintenance of all IDRH digital media platforms (website and social media)

Other Duties and Special Projects as Assigned (5%)

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities, Libraries or related field.
2. Three (3) years of experience working in the digital humanities field.
3. Demonstrated expertise in digital humanities tools, digital storytelling, or digital humanities research methods (e.g. website design, computational text analysis, spatial data manipulation/mapping, data modeling and visualization, machine learning, digital publishing, developing digital archives).

Preferred Qualifications

1.  Education:
   •    Master’s Degree in a relevant field
   2.    Experience:

•  three years of directly relevant experience working in the digital humanities, including project creation and implementation
  •    Experience using the digital humanities with underrepresented groups
  •    Experience with grant proposal development

3.  Skills:

•  Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver presentations, workshops, and other training
  •    Ability to consult on a wide range of DH projects, tools, methods
  •    Broad familiarity with the field of digital humanities and the field’s current trends and resources
  •    Excellent communication skills (oral, written, listening), including the ability to provide constructive feedback to a range of audiences
  •    Detail oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  •    Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines under strict guidelines
  •    Ability to work independently and in teams
  •    Ability to edit grant proposals, website content, and other documents
  •    Broad understanding of college/university research environment
