Call For Papers for volume on Music, Dance and the Archive Submissions are invited for a proposed volume exploring music, dance and the archive, focusing in particular on Indigenous performance practices around the world. The volume will be edited by Amanda Harris, Jakelin Troy and Linda Barwick, investigators on the ARC funded project ‘Reclaiming Performance under Assimilation in Southeast Australia, 1935-75‘. Proposals due 15 May, full papers due 15 September 2020. This volume will pose questions such as:

      • What kinds of records of historical performance are preserved in archives?
      • Whose perspectives do archival records favour, and what methodologies can be actioned to include other perspectives?
      • What use can archival records be in renewing different kinds of performance?
      • What is the relationship between the live body and historical objects?
      • How can embodied explorations of history bring archival records to life?
      • What can detailed microhistories from the archives reveal about larger phenomena in music and dance?
      • Can archives be used to produce big data about music and dance and associated cultural practices?
      • Are ‘traditional’ or ‘hybrid’ performances favoured in archives and what does this mean for contemporary practices?

Proposals for chapters of between 5,000 and 7,000 words are welcomed from scholars working across musicology, linguistics, cultural history, dance history, digital humanities, curatorial studies, performance studies and related disciplines. A proposed title, 500 word (maximum) abstract, and 300 word (maximum) bio should be emailed to reclaimingperformance@gmail.com by 15 May 2020.
