      @rlocke

      Todd L. Burns has just published his interview with me (done by email) in his wide-ranging blog “Music Journalism Insider.”

      Most of the items in the blog refer to pop-music and jazz, or occasionally “world music,” and most of the writers profiled and quoted are not academics.

      Still, he often includes links to what he calls “Academic Stuff” (e.g., the table of contents of a new issue of a scholarly journal). And he has interviewed several musicologists in previous issues, such as Gabrielle Cornish (U Miami—she was a wonderful student in my last PhD seminar at Eastman!), Mark Katz (UNC/Chapel Hill), and James Grier (U Western Ontario).

      Todd gave me a list of questions to choose from, and I wrote up my replies, which can be read at https://www.musicjournalisminsider.com/archive/ralph-locke-interview/.

      The main topic that I discuss is the relationship between music and concepts of the exotic, including the fraught issue of ethnic/national stereotypes.

      Other topics include:

      –what attracted me to the field of musicology, exoticism and ethnic/national stereotypes,

      –how much one gets paid for writing about music,

      –the advantages of Open Access publishing, and

      –some musicological authors whose writings I recommend to general readers.

      MJI included links to writings of mine that are online–or to the journal or publishing house, for cases where the article or book is not Open Access.

      You can subscribe to \”Music Journalism Insider\” at https://www.musicjournalisminsider.com/. This enables you to read all previous issues. My interview remains Open Access through the end of November 2021.

      I love the field of musicology and hope that the Humanities Commons AMS Forum can help keep the discussion flowing about it! There have been very few postings here over the past year.

      Best,

      Ralph
