Manual of Therapeutic Architecture

PhD Position for the research project ‘Manual of Therapeutic Architecture’ at Faculty of Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urban Planning (LOCI), Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium

For centuries, epidemics have been disrupting the lives of human beings. In the absence of, and while waiting for, ultimate medical responses, architecture has multiplied solutions to limit the epidemic’ spread. Based on various forms of physical distancing, sometimes permanent and visionary, sometimes emergential and temporary, these solutions revealed the ‘therapeutic power’ of architecture in spatial configuration. To date, this ‘power’ remains largely overlooked. The Manual of Therapeutic Architecture aims to: elaborate a history of using architecture as a therapeutic tool in health crises; evaluate the characteristics of spatial solutions; establish a reference for any other form of distancing that a future epidemic will make inevitable.

Job Description

The department offers a full-time appointment for a doctoral scholarship in the field of architectural history, theory and criticism. Your main assignment consists in carrying out the research project (including writing a PhD dissertation, publications in peer-reviewed academic journals, applications for fundings and presenting papers at international conferences) under the supervision of Prof. Beatrice Lampariello (History and Theory of Architecture). You will work within the research group of Super-Positions at the Faculty of Architecture, Engineering Architecture and Urbanism.

The research is funded by the Seedfund FSR of the Université catholique de Louvain. The grant is according to UCLouvain regulations for a PhD scholarship. Grant duration: 2 years. For completing the PhD, application for additional fundings (FNRS,Fresh/Aspirant; UCLouvain FSR; others) will be required.

Profile

The applicant has a master degree in Architecture or related fields and obtained this degree no longer than 5 years ago.

– The applicant is passionate about research in the field of the history, theory and criticism of architecture.

– The applicant can demonstrate excellent study results, a distinguished academic career or professional experience. The applicant should be able to demonstrate excellent writing skills by means of an article or master thesis.

– The applicant shows a pro-active attitude and can work both individually and in a team.

– The applicant has excellent writing skills in English and/or French and is fluent in both languages.
