AL883: Current trends in EdTech

In thinking about digital technologies and how to integrate them into teaching practices within my field, I realized that my focus has been on how to integrate them into the already existing framework. One of the reasons that has proven to be both frustrating and difficult is because I have come to understand that I know very little about contemporary pedagogy within my field, let alone what EdTech exists. This forced the question of how I am going to be able to create a curriculum that integrates technology when I don’t even understand what is available. With that in mind, I searched for a basic understanding of what technologies exist and how they are being utilized. In my research I came across the article Trajectories For Digital Technology In Higher Education on Educause.edu. This article broke down six individual trajectories of digital technology: device ownership and mobile-first; the textbook and open educational resources (OER); adaptive learning technology; learning spaces; the next generation learning management system (LMS); and learning analytics and integrated planning and advising services (IPAS). It first explained what they were and how they were currently being utilized in higher education, then it explained what new innovations where being implemented and what the trajectory of each of them appeared to be.
Integrating technology into a field that, historically, utilizes very little is requiring me to completely reevaluate what a studio art classroom could look like. By nature, it is already less of a lecture setting and more of an interactive one, but that has not opened up an inclusion of technology. After reading this article, I believe that there are a number of ways that technology could be integrated into studio arts while still preserving the basic needs of a studio art curriculum. The utilization of OER’s for learning some of the fundamentals of art, adapting the studio learning spaces to be more like makerspaces so that they are in working groups instead of work tables facing the front of the room, and creating assignments where they vlog themselves while they create so that their classmates can help troubleshoot problems are all easy ways to instantly increase technology use. Creating a class that is more hybrid in nature could also be very useful in creating artists that are not only skilled in their medium, but also skilled in art research, creating an online presence, and art writing.
