This paper was prepared  for the Society for Study of Japanese Religions Meeting in Conjunction with the Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference, Toronto, 3/17/2017.

Mark Rowe chaired the meeting. Satofumi Kawamura of the University of Tokyo Center for Philosophy presented a response from the standpoint of a scholar of modern Japanese thought. Dr. Helen Hardacre appeared via Skype and delivered a forty-minute discussion of the responses.
