As educators, we are all familiar with Bloom’s Taxonomy and the way it progressively maps the cognitive activities involved in learning and constructing knowledge. Too often, however, we educators who work in writing-focused curricula ask our students to work in the higher-order cognitive domains of analysis and creation without necessarily giving them enough (or perhaps simply explicit enough) guidance and instruction in the foundational precursor domains of “remember” and “understand.” This infographic creates a version of Bloom’s Taxonomy specific to the instruction of writing and compositional principles as a way to help instructors and students alike explicitly map the progressive skills and cognitive work involved in crafting intentional, powerful prose that communicate a student’s authentic voice.
