In my research on H.D.’s HER, I introduce the concept of ‘suffragette syndrome’ coined by me to analyze Hermione, H.D.’s autobiographical double, through the lens of Gramsci’s conceptualization of the interplay between elite structures and revolted suffragettes. This study scrutinizes how Hermione’s struggle mirrors the paradox faced by early suffragettes, who, while seeking to dismantle patriarchal hegemony, became unwittingly coopted into it. I argue that her narrative is a vivid illustration of the intricate dance between resistance and assimilation, highlighting the subtle ways in which women, intent on challenging the system, can inadvertently reinforce the very structures they aim to subvert. This analysis sheds light on the complex dynamics of power, gender, and resistance, offering a nuanced understanding of the historical and ongoing challenges faced by women in their fight against entrenched ideological systems.
