Paulino Capdepon deposited La capilla de música de la Catedral de Segorbe en el siglo XVII [The chapel music at the Segorbe Cathedral in 18th century] in the group
Society for Music Theory (SMT) on Humanities Commons 2 years, 11 months ago Together with the cathedrals of Valencia and Orihuela and the Seminary of Corpus Christi in Valencia, the Cathedral of Segorbe is one of the main musical centres of the Valencian Community. This article is an introduction to the origin of the diocese, its difficulties in establishing itself and, finally, its administrative structure and the main ecclesiastical offices. After this introduction, it analyses the musical activity of the maestros who taught chapel music in the cathedral during the 18th century (Mateo Peñalba, Onofre Molina, José Conejos Ortells, José Gil Pérez, Francisco Vives, Vicente Olmos, José Gavaldá, Joaquín López, José Morata and José Gil). The importance of Valencia as a training centre for the musicians of Segorbe stands out, and in some cases as the final goal of their professional career. For this purpose, we rely on different documentation preserved in the Cathedral, which nevertheless offers some gaps as part of the chapter minutes were lost during the Spanish Civil War.
