This is the first chapter of ‘The ARM RISC chip: a programmer’s guide’ published by Addison-Wesley at the end of 1993, and documenting the prehistory and very early years of what was then ARM Ltd, developing RISC CPUs for desktop computers and increasingly for mobile platforms.
