This letter to his mother Jane from the linen merchant John McCaldin Loewenthal was mailed on 1st December 1893 from the SS Nile, anchored near Fort Villegaignon in Bahia state, Brazil. The letter includes details of the bombardment of the rebels holding the fort as part of the Brazilian Naval Revolts of the 19th Century.
