Amaranta Saguar García deposited Medievalising Narratives in Heavy Metal: When Fascist and Non-Fascist Discourses Are Indistinguishable on Humanities Commons 5 years, 6 months ago
The fascination of both fascism and heavy metal for similar aspects of the Middle Ages (power, masculinity, heroism…) and their reliance on a shared cultural background of medievalising Western pop-culture make it difficult to distinguish heavy metal narratives from fascist ones. In this paper I will explore how undistinguishable medievalising lyrics by far-right and presumably non-far-right heavy metal bands can turn out to be and discuss, first, the reasons behind this indistinguishability and, second, the options available, if any, to sing about the Middle Ages without unwillingly supporting far-right friendly discourses.
