Besides being one of the most acclaimed English novelists, Jane Austen (1775-1817) is widely recognised as one of the most adapted authors. Her works have originated countless screen and television adaptations, not to mention works in other media, turning her into one of the most complex cultural constructs in modernity. In 2009, the publication of the parody novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, by Seth Grahame-Smith, made the unexpected proposition of adding zombies to Austen’s most recognised novel. Having received wide public acclaim, it originated its own adaptations, namely a graphic novel by Tony Lee and Cliff Richards (2010), a video game for mobile devices by Freeverse (2010) and, more recently, a feature film directed by Burr Steers (2016). The present study aims at exploring this cinematic adaptation, in terms of the relationship it establishes with both novels and as an object in its own right, creating renewed cultural meaning. This analysis will also take into consideration intermedial influences, including from the previous adaptations of Grahame-Smith’s novel above mentioned. Special attention will be paid to the importance of the zombie as a marker of contemporaneity.
