    Hi All,

I agree with Trevor, and John has been making this point at the meetings for the last few years, that our “mission” has actually changed (and I won’t qualify this with somewhat) since the PMIG. Here are points that I believe are from the mission statement:

    • Ensuring academic recognition for popular music research
    • Encouraging more scholars of music theory to engage popular repertoires
    • Encouraging scholars of popular music to make effective use of musical analysis and theory

I was in the group that originally formed the group, and back in 1998 you did not have any sessions on popular music. I think the special session we did Chapel Hill was one of the first. If you compare 1998 with 2018, I think every time slot on every day had a session or a paper on popular music. I think points two and three need attention, especially three, which I think could be the theme of our meeting at SMT. Along the lines of the second point, we should hold session helping scholars who would like to participate in the analysis of popular music to help them get started. I think we can replace the first point with something like “Ensuring curricular integration for popular music in core theory programs. This is an area where I think theorist still find quite a bit of resistance.

    All the best,

    Ciro
