Scripture and religious tradition identify three virtues ordered to the spiritual. These virtues are faith, hope and charity; they may be understood as an attitude of will that makes their possessor good and the work done good. Classical epistemology, which is often used to interpret the virtues, is deficient as an interpretive tool in the contemporary Western context. An alternative method to understand virtues is pro- posed, an humanitarian existential interpretation. Adler’s Individual Psychology provides a basis for a humanitarian understanding of the virtues.
