Many traits of Beckett’s mature writing begin to take shape in the stories he wrote in 1945, in which the story and the characters are masks for the act of writing rather than realistic creatures. The story may be given a reflexive reading, in which paradoxical relationships are established between the act of writing and the character’s adventures which are produced by this writing, transforming the adventures into a reflection of the writing, and the writing into a metafictional adventure.
