Caroline Hampshire deposited Capability Brown’s Garden and the Georgic Mode on Humanities Commons 8 years, 4 months ago
This essay discusses how the gardening methodology of Capability Brown is used as an aesthetic model for the inherently georgic process of Dryden’s poetic translation. I use ‘Brownian georgics’ in order to stylistically analyse John Dryden’s translation of Virgil’s Georgics (prefaced by Joseph Addison’s ‘Essay’). This is accomplished by examining three specific elements of the English garden which serve as visual models for Dryden’s work and Addison’s commentary: labour, control, and cohesion.
