• Ricky Broome deposited Outsiders in the Community: Franks and non-Franks in the Late Merovingian Period in the group Group logo of Early MedievalEarly Medieval on Humanities Commons 8 years, 8 months ago

This paper provides an analysis of the attitude towards non-Franks in the late Merovingian period, distinguishing between the ethnic community of the Franks and the political community of the regnum Francorum, which were conceived of existing side by side. The paper attempts to show that, unlike in the early Carolingian period, ethnic labels were not necessarily used as a method of exclusion. Rather, the community of the regnum Francorum was built on the interactions between various ethnic groups, although the Franks were the dominant, and all owed allegiance to the Merovingian kings.
