Authoritative quotations are used in “Celestina” with argumentative purposes. The Bible being the greatest authority of all, characters resort frequently to the Scriptures to support their point of view or to convince others. Among the biblical texts, wisdom books are the most quoted on account of their proverbial form and moral content and, among wisdom books, Ecclesiasticus is the most recurrent. However, the holiness of the Bible does not prevent these quotations from being misused. In this paper I will analyse how Celestina manipulates one chapter of Ecclesiasticus to convince Pármeno to join her party. Moreover, I will give some reasons why she could have chosen Ecclesiasticus to support her argumentation and not other biblical text. Finally, I will try to explain why the Bible is treated like any other authoritative source and the consequences of this treatment.
